Nadia Villasenor, a University of Victoria Economics graduate originally from Vancouver, British Columbia, took up her placement at Fundación Paraguay in Asunción, Paraguay, in August, 2006.
She will be helping the organization to assess its performance and develop a strategic plan. She has also been working on projects assisting the microfinance department with client interviews, and also writing reports on human resources issues within the organization.
Nadia has also availed herself of the opportunity to increase her exposure to the local culture. She writes: Paraguayans are extremely kind, friendly and have a great sense of humour.
I have become accustomed to the Paraguayan accent and intonation of speech, and the next step for me would be learning some basic Guarani. I am humbled by the respect Paraguayans have given to this ancient language and in turn, the respect they have given to their ancestors. Asunción is a city rich with history and diversity and I have only just begun.
